Probation and Dismissal

Undergraduate Students

The Academic Standings Committee reviews the academic records of all undergraduate students at the end of the Fall and Spring terms. Students whose Elmhurst University term, cumulative or combined grade point average (GPA) falls between 1.00 and 2.00 will be placed on Academic Probation, if it is the first such occurrence.

Students on Academic Probation must earn a minimum term GPA of 2.00 for the term immediately following the one in which they were placed on Academic Probation (excluding January and Summer). If, while on Academic Probation, a student’s term GPA again falls below 2.00, the student may be subject to Academic Dismissal.

Students with term, cumulative or combined GPAs below 1.00 may also be subject to Academic Dismissal from the University.

Students who have been dismissed have the right to appeal if they conclude they have significant information that would warrant a reconsideration of the dismissal decision. Students who have been dismissed and do not successfully appeal may not register for classes, including as a non-degree or visiting student.

Dismissed students may apply for readmission to Elmhurst University after one year has passed since their dismissal.

Student’s failing to meet satisfactory academic progress may have their financial aid eligibility suspended. Students that are suspended are offered the option to appeal and be placed in a probation status which may include an academic plan for improvement.

Additional information about the academic standings policy may be obtained from the Office of Advising.

Graduate Students

A second C or C+ grade, a C- grade, a D grade or an F grade will result in dismissal from the graduate program and the University. The program director will notify the student, in writing, of the dismissal decision. The academic good standing policy for the Computer Information Technology program is significantly different. Students in this program should refer to the specific program sections of this catalog. Note: each student must maintain academic good standing in their respective program as defined by the graduate program. In all cases, individual program policies concerning academic good standing take precedence. It is the student’s responsibility to know the policies of their program.

Reinstatement

Students who have been dismissed and wish to be considered for readmission to graduate study at Elmhurst University must apply for readmission to the University and the graduate program. Readmission consideration will be at the discretion of the program director and the director.
